SSgt-(BM) David Hamilton

SSgt (BM) David Hamilton joined the Royal Corps of Army Music in September 2020 as the first ever Lateral Entry into the British Army. David won a full scholarship to study at the Junior Department of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) alongside his secondary education and played tuba with the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland, National Youth Orchestra of Scotland, National Youth Brass Band of Scotland and the European Youth Brass Band.

After a number of years working in secondary education, David returned to music performance and to full-time study at the Royal Northern College of Music, graduating with a First-Class Honours degree and a Master of Music degree with distinction. David subsequently performed with many of the country’s leading orchestras including the BBC Philharmonic, Orchestra of Opera North, Ulster Orchestra and Manchester Camerata as well as with many of the world’s top brass bands such as Brighouse & Rastrick, Fairey’s and Black Dyke Band.

Following a successful freelance career, David completed basic training at ATR Grantham before embarking on the two-year British Army Bandmaster Course at theRoyal Military School of Music as part of the Sian Edwards Class – the last bandmaster class to have studied at Kneller Hall. He graduated in August 2022, winning the Commandant’s Prize, the Kneller Wing Prize and the Fred Mortimer Statuette.

Following a year-long assignment as Assistant Bandmaster to the Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland in Edinburgh, David was assigned Bandmaster to The Band of the Prince of Wales in 2023 and has recently began work at Horse Guards for Headquarters Regional Bands.
