About Alder Valley
Brass

Alder Valley Brass is one of the South East's finest brass bands, and provides music to enhance any occasion.

For more than 50 years Alder Valley Brass has performed at venues ranging from London's Royal Albert Hall, Windsor Castle, Epsom race course and Hampton Court Palace, to many of the UK's famous parks & bandstands.

Much of the band's concert work is in support of local charities and there have been proud moments working with Help for Heroes and the Royal British Legion, charities selected by the Mayor of Rushmoor at concerts, as well as The SSAFA and Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice.

    Cllr Michael Steel, Mayor of Godalming and Joy Poulter MBE attended the last Music in the Park Bandstand Concert of 2021 in Phillips Memorial Ground, Godalming.

    First band event of 2021!

    The weather was perfect and we had a super audience for our first band event of 2021 on August 22nd. We performed in the Public Gardens, Alton, Hampshire.

  • Rehearsals have started again!

    Rehearsals started again!

    The Band are once again rehearsing as per normal, after months practicing at home during lockdown. Rehearsals started during May, in Farnham and also in Worplesdon. However, as of 7 June, we will, once again, be back at All Hallows School in Farnham, every Monday and Thursday evening between 8 and 10pm.

    Filming Netflix 'The Dig'

    Members of the band took part in the filming of The Dig which is released recently on Netflix, the film is in the Netflix Top 10.

    All members who took part had costumes made for them, and has an early start to the day for makeup to be done before recording could take place. Shooting began at Shackleford in Surrey in October 2019.

    'Standard of St George', 'La Rejouissance' from Handals Firework music and 'After You’ve Gone' were the pieces the band recorded. The Dig is a drama film directed by Simon Stone, based on the 2007 novel of the same name by John Preston, which reimagines the events of the 1939 excavation of Sutton Hoo. It stars Carey Mulligan, Ralph Fiennes, Lily James, Johnny Flynn, Ben Chaplin, Ken Stott, Archie Barnes and Monica Dolan.

    Bordon Annington Property Carols

    Annington Property Limited organised a Christmas carolling event, for recently refurbished houses in Woodland Park/St Lucia Park in Bordon. It created some socially distanced Christmas cheer to the new residents.

    In December Alder Valley Brass made a socially distanced appearance at the Glow, RHS Wisley.

  • Nick Betts

    Musician of the year

    Nick Betts was presented with his Musician of the Year Trophy at RHS Wisley in December - 1st Horn in recognition for his sterling work in the band over the past year. Nick joined in 2013.

    Nick started to play at the age of 11 and has played tenor horn with North East Hampshire Area Youth Band and Durham University Brass Band where he was an exec member and the president. The award will be presented at the next rehearsal.

    Band Person of the Year

    As voted by the members of the band, this is an award to someone who has made a significant contribution to the band over and above normal band activity.

    Claire Wade was awarded this for her work as General Secretary. The award will be presented at the next rehearsal.

  • Derek Creesey

    Derek Creesey

    It is with great sorrow that Alder Valley Brass learnt of the passing of Derek Creesey recently (on the left in the photo). Derek followed the band for almost 30 years. He came to most concerts and was last seen in October 2019, at Frensham Heights School , near Farnham.

    Derek was a very kind man, and has given money to raise funds for the band on many occasions for which we are most grateful. Our thoughts go to his family and friends at this sad time.

    Zero to over 10k members!

    In these unprecedented times Brass Bands have been asked not to meet for their usual practice twice a week and stay at home. Sadly Alder Valley Brass have cancelled all rehearsals now until further notice. Many of you will know for bandsman this is, a very hard thing to do. Steve Burgess, Principal Cornet, for Alder Valley Brass decided on his first Monday evening at home without

    rehearsal, to start up the ‘Bored Bandsman’ group on Facebook. This group has been so successful that it already has over 10,700 world wide members! Numbers are still rising every hour. This group provides a lot of support for likeminded Musicians, do join and see what’s going on. You never know, there may even be an internet massed band formed with world wide members.

    Portsmouth Music Festival

    After several weeks of practice since Christmas. Alder Valley Brass played their Test piece ‘Legacy by Tom Daveron’ at the Portsmouth Music Festival on Sunday 1st March.

    Much to the delight of their MD, Lee Woodward, they gained a distinction for the performance.

    Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice

    Each December, while playing carols, Alder Valley Brass collect money for Charity. This year they collected in aid of Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice at Guildford High Street and Farnham Christmas Market.

    Charli Quay-Barnham, Community Fund Raising Manager, came along to a recent rehearsal in order to thank the band and collect a cheque for £402.71.

    A small team of musicians went along to St Michael's Infant School, Aldershot, to take part in a Brass Assembly. Everyone had a great time and it was agreed it had been a very popular event.

    The band took time out from their busy schedule in December, to relax and enjoy some social time together.

    National Trust, Uppark House was decorated beautifully for Christmas. We entertained the visitors with some festive music.

    Winchester was particularly busy when we played our annual Carols at Winchester City Mill. Visitors took time to visit the Mill and sample freshly made mince pies and mulled wine.

    National Trust, Uppark House was decorated beautifully for Christmas. We entertained the visitors with some festive music.

    Hundreds of people flocked to Farnham to visit the Annual Christmas Market. We took part by playing carols for people to listen to while they shopped.

    The Band were at Mercia Walk, Woking on November 2nd for the launch of the 2019 Woking Poppy Appeal.

    The Band performed at Frensham Heights School yesterday evening together with Guildford Vox Community Choir. All proceeds went to Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice who’s work does so much for the local community.

    Soloists were Steve Burgess, principal Cornet who played Charivari. Liz Sandford, solo horn who played Over the Rainbow. And Roy Hancock and Bob Larbey, Euphoniums with a super sketch of ‘Laurel and Hardy’, 'Another Fine Mess'. We wait to see how much money has been raised for Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice.

    Our summer outside entertainment concluded with The River Wey Festival which took place at Dapdune Wharf, Guildford. Lots of people came along to enjoy the last of the good summer weather and to listen to the band. Boats were already moored up ready for the highlight of the whole day.

    The illuminated pageant at dusk, with boats travelling from the centre of Guildford to Dapdune Wharf, brilliantly lit up with fairy lights.

    The Deputy Mayor of Farnham, Councillor Alan Earwaker, was in attendance at the Bandstand in Gostrey Meadow, Farnham for the last Sunday for 2019 of Music in the Meadow.

    During the afternoon our chairman, Roy Hancock was able to thank the Deputy Mayor and Farnham Town Council for the grant which was given to the band so that we were able to purchase the new banners for the music stands.

    We would like to wish Derek Creesey a very happy 90th birthday. Derek has supported the band for many years, for which we are most grateful. We hope you have a lovely day on Sunday.

    After the Emsworth Show, band members rounded off the bank holiday weekend with the annual band social. First by playing a game of crazy golf followed by a delicious meal.

    Tesco Aldershot Fund Raiser

    Thank you to Tesco Aldershot for allowing us to start their major fundraising weekend! We helped to raise over £2000 for Tesco Aldershot Dance Beats over the weekend that we supported for Cancer Research, Diabetes and British Heart Foundation.

    On two Sundays in July, Alder Valley Brass entertained the audience at National Trust, Uppark in West Sussex.

    Roy Hancock, chairman of Alder Valley Brass presented a cheque for £350 to Charli Quay-Barnham Community Fund Raising Manager for Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice at their rehearsal at All Hallows School tonight.

  • Tuesday 21st December : The Meadows, Camberley. 19.30.
This is what is planned, but is all subject to us being able to play due to Covid restrictions.
